Home Learning Challenge Week 9

After last week's challenge to practise sketching and "learning to look", we are switching to Science and the Living World this week. (Great attitude and effort last week, by the way...some very good sketches! Keep practising.)
This week, choose at least one of the birds that we saw at Spencer Park and research it. Find out about
  • what it looks like,
  • breeding and nesting,
  • food and habitat,
  • how rare it is, and
  • what threatens its survival.

You may choose from: harrier (kahu); little owl; black stilt (kaki); wrybill; pukeko; welcome swallow; black billed gull; red billed gull; black backed gull;…
or look at http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/

Home Learning Challenge Weeks 6 & 7

We have been making models from cardboard and paper...have a look at what Oscar, Lincoln, Abbey and Claudia have done, based on Christchurch earthquake remembrance and Roald Dahl characters.

We have also been trying to sketch the map of NZ freehand (without copying)...a good challenge, and it helps us to get to know our country better.

Keep working on your personal fitness...Cross Country is coming up early next term.

Home Learning Challenge - Week 5

What a great swimming sports last Friday! Congratulations on your progress and improving style. Some of you competed in 25m or 50m events for the first time, and some of you beat the qualifying time in breaststroke to get to the zone sports on 9th March.

This week's Home Challenge continues your good work with Maths facts, sets you a fitness challenge (see here),  asks you to present your "Christchurch Remembers" pictures and video clips, and sets you a creative challenge...make a mask or model. See  https://nz.pinterest.com/explore/paper-mache-mask/ for mask ideas ... I'd love to see a Roald Dahl character...

... or Google Search  images:Christchurch cathedral models” for ideas about a model of our cathedral.

Spelling challenge this week...

leant, lent, practice, practise, councillor, counsellor, choose, chose, loose, lose

Let's see how you get on...are you getting better at organising your time?

Home Learning Challenge - Week 3

This week see if you can show improvement with your Maths facts, spell some easily confused words, and read an excerpt from a Roald Dahl book in a way that captures the audience...

Listen again to this excerpt from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04pvf2x to give you some ideas about reading with expression.

And just for fun...a little bit of science. (Why does that happen?)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViZNgU-Yt-Y

Spelling Word Challenge

Write these in sentences to show the meaning...

its, it's, piece, peace, desert, dessert, die, dye, waist, waste

Fitness Challenge

  • How many of the fitness circuit activities can you do? Keep a log each day, including how many times you repeat, and how long it takes you. e.g.
    • 20 step - ups (each side)
    • Planks (prone hold) front, side, front, side ...20 seconds each
    •  10 squats (3 seconds down, 3 seconds up)
    • 10 push ups
    • 10 knee-touches with elbow (like a sit-up)
    • 20 calf-raises
    • 20 leg lifts each side (kneeling position, one leg extended, raised & lowered)
    • 2 lap run
    • REPEAT 2-3 times
By keeping a log, it will help to remind you to actually do it, rather than just want to get fit.

2017 here we come!

Welcome back to Ouruhia for 2017. We are looking forward to another great year.

In Room 5 we pride ourselves on being the best that we can be, and getting fired up about learning. Room 5 kids show a desire to learn, the ability to self-manage and meet deadlines, and commitment to caring for our school. (We called this "kaitiakitanga", or guardianship.)

Each week our home learning challenges  help us practise important skills and be self-winding learners. Our home learning challenges include personal fitness, spelling and Maths basic facts.

This week and next we are looking at Waitangi Day, its history and some interesting facts.
