Home learning task:
- What do you think?
- What is symbolised in our current flag?
- Do people confuse our flag with Australia's? Draw NZ's flag and Australia's to show the differences.
- What other flag designs could we use? Copy 3 of your favourites. What do they symbolise?
- Ask friends and family what they think, or read letters to the editor, and summarise 2-3 views. Do they make a good point? Do you agree?
To manage this task you will need to be a Thinker, you will need to independently find information from a range of places, organise your time so you are finished by Friday, and present your work in an attractive and easy-to-follow way.
You may even choose to add comments to this blog!
Good luck!
Friday 14th: Here we are looking at some newspaper articles to see what others think...
I think we should have the silver fern as our flag because it represents our country

ReplyDeleteWe think the flag should not be changed. It looks fine the way it is.
ReplyDeleteOur flag represents The four southern stars which can only be seen in NewZealand , Australia, South Africa and some others.
I think there are far more important issues for us to be thinking about, the government often uses side issues such as these to confuse us and distract us about other more important things that are happening right now that should have our full attention.
ReplyDeleteNew Zealand has become a more strong and independent country since the signing of the treaty in 1840. Having a new flag will make New Zealand more recognisable to the world as many people get our flag confused with Australia. Having a new flag, gives us the chance to incorporate New Zealand's two main cultures (Pakeha and Maori), as our current flag represents Britain (i.e. the Union Jack). New Zealand wants to be a significant country, and changing the flag to represent us, is leading us towards our goal. We are NOT losing our history - in fact we are creating it.
